Costs
Gutter replacement cost in 2026
Published Australian guides put a standard single-storey Colorbond gutter replacement with downpipes around $3,000 to $6,000. Material-only and installed metre rates describe different scopes; use them to frame a quote, not predict an exact price for your house.
Per metre, by material
| Material | Gutter only, per metre | Installed, per metre |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl (PVC) | $30 to $35 | $25 to $50 (sheds) |
| Zincalume | $30 to $50 | $40 to $70 (quad) |
| Colour-coated (Colorbond) | $45 to $67 | $45 to $95 |
| Stainless steel | $85 to $160 | |
| Copper half round | $150 to $300 |
Gutter-only prices: hipages, January 2026. Installed prices: Yakka Labour, October 2026, single-storey, removal of old gutters included.
Whole house

Extras on the quote
Yakka Labour's published ranges include about $150 to $350 per downpipe, $1,200 to $3,500 for two-storey edge protection or scaffolding, and $35 to $90 per metre for fascia work, depending on its type. These are indicative guide figures, not additional items that necessarily apply to every quote.
The ABCB's NCC 2022 explanation describes a maximum 12 m served eaves-gutter length per downpipe within its housing provisions. That spacing reference is not a complete drainage calculation or a box-gutter design. Check the applicable edition and state provisions with the roof plumber; the example below does not establish compliance.
Gutter check
Check downpipe spacing
Enter total eaves-gutter length and downpipe count for a rough average against a 12-metre spacing reference. Individual runs, roof catchment, rainfall and outlets still need checking.

Method: the cited housing provisions use a 12 m maximum served gutter length and outlets near valleys. Use the code edition and state provisions applicable to the work. A total-length average does not check every individual run; a roof plumber checks rainfall, catchment, size and overflow provision.
Compare material-only and installed prices fairly
The first table deliberately separates the gutter product from installed work. A length of gutter bought from a supplier is not the same purchase as a contractor removing an old system, supplying accessories and fitting a replacement. Do not add or compare those columns as if they describe identical jobs.
An installed metre rate should say what it includes. Ask whether brackets, corners, stop ends, outlets, removal and disposal are covered, and whether the rate assumes a straightforward single-storey installation. Identify downpipes and other changes separately if they are not included.
The published examples also come from different sources with different assumptions. A material-only range exceeding the bottom of an installed range is not proof that installation is free: it signals that the product or job being described is different. Compare a single specified system and scope when obtaining actual quotes.
Measure gutter length, not floor area
Gutters are generally discussed by linear metre, while a roof covering is commonly priced by square metre. A four-bedroom label or floor area does not tell you every gutter length, corner, valley or downpipe on a particular house.
For an initial brief, provide the contractor with a plan if you have one and identify the sections you want assessed. A whole-house replacement and a repair to one side are different scopes. Leave measurements requiring roof or elevated access to the contractor.
On an irregular house, several short runs may involve more junctions than one straight run of the same total length. Ask the quote to identify the affected lengths and accessories rather than comparing only the total metres. Also confirm whether attached verandahs, garages and extensions are included.
A worked budget, not a real quoted job
Take a hypothetical 50-metre single-storey replacement. Using an illustrative installed rate of $60 per metre gives a gutter-length component of $3,000. If four downpipes are separately priced at an illustrative $200 each, they add $800, making $3,800 before any other separately quoted work.
The selected rates sit within the cited published ranges, but they are not an offer, a measured average or a prediction for your home. They are chosen only to show the arithmetic. Do not add downpipes twice if a real whole-house quote already includes them.
Now suppose the actual inspection identifies fascia work, a difficult access arrangement or an altered drainage connection. Those items need their own scope and price; this example has not allowed for them. Conversely, if a contractor's figure already includes removal and accessories, adding an extra allowance for the same work would overstate the comparison.
The useful calculation is the sum of the agreed line items. Ask the contractor to identify inclusions and exclusions before trying to reconcile a headline metre rate with the final total.
Why access and fascia condition change the scope
Ask the inspection to establish the condition of the existing fascia and supports. A replacement fitted to sound existing components is a different proposal from work that first needs to replace or repair those components. Confirm which task is included and what happens if concealed damage is found.
Access should also be described for the property, including height, boundaries, attached structures or other obstacles relevant to the contractor's method. A published single-storey rate cannot price the protection and access needed for every two-storey or difficult site.
If comparing quotes, check that they allow for the same access and preparatory work. A lower total that leaves these items for later is not necessarily a lower price for the same completed job. Request clarification before accepting an unexplained difference.
Profile, material and drainage changes
The visible shape is the gutter profile; the material, coating and colour are separate specifications. Ask for the actual product, size and variant. Our gutter profiles guide explains why names such as quad and OGEE should not be assumed to identify interchangeable fittings.
For an overflowing system, ask what the assessment found before ordering a like-for-like replacement. The proposed work may involve cleaning, repairing condition, altering outlets or reviewing capacity. Replacing the visible gutter does not by itself explain whether the contributing roof and connected drainage have been assessed.
An internal box gutter is a different arrangement from an exposed perimeter gutter. Make its location clear when seeking a quote and avoid using an ordinary eaves-gutter metre rate as its budget. Ask the contractor to identify the drainage design and connected work that the replacement requires.
The documents to keep with the quote
Keep a written description of the affected lengths, specified product and colour, downpipes, outlets, access, removal, fascia work and exclusions. The quoted total should make clear whether GST is included and how any further work would be agreed.
Check the contractor's entitlement for the actual work in your state; see what roof plumbing is. Ask which completion documents apply to the job rather than assuming one national licensing or certification rule.
At handover, retain the agreed scope and any product or completion information provided. It should be possible to identify what was replaced and what remains from the earlier installation. That is more useful for later maintenance than an invoice describing only "new gutters".
Common questions
How much does it cost to replace gutters per metre?
About $45 to $95 per metre installed for Colorbond quad or half round, according to Yakka Labour; the gutter material alone is $30 to $160 per metre, according to hipages.
Should I replace 20 year old gutters?
Age alone does not decide it. Have the condition, supports, joints and drainage assessed, then compare the scope of any proposed repair with replacement.
